Elegant Print, Tiny Format: A Mini Cookbook for The Aristologist

The Aristologist is one of New Zealand’s most distinctive publications—a journal and symposium series dedicated to preserving the food history of Aotearoa and its neighbours. When editor Duncan Galletly came to us with A New Zealand Cookbook by Pummereboo, a quirky 20-page volume of recipes from 1849, including gems like “Dog Tail Soup,” the brief was simple: make it small, sharp, and archival. At just 75 x 100mm, this project pushed the limits of what’s practical in booklet printing—and that’s exactly why he came to us. We’ve been printing The Aristologist journal for 15+ years, and when something unique is needed, we know how to deliver.

We digitally printed 70 copies using a mix of high-quality stocks for both look and feel. The sky-blue cover was printed CMYK on 240gsm Pop’Set—an uncoated, smooth paper that holds colour beautifully and feels great in-hand. The internal pages were printed in crisp black ink on 135gsm Eco-100, a 100% recycled stock that lends both texture and integrity. Finished with saddle-stitching and precision-trimmed to miniature size, the result is a compact print piece that feels deliberate, not gimmicky.

Not every print shop tackles projects this small, but after years working with The Aristologist, we’ve learned how to get the details right when it matters most.
